With so many teeth whitening options available—both over-the-counter and professional—it can be difficult to determine which option is best for your teeth. While take-home tray whitening systems are effective, patients typically prefer in-office teeth whitening with their dentist. That’s because professional whitening involves careful preparation and the use of high-quality products that yield results almost immediately.
Teeth typically become discolored through extrinsic factors like coffee, wine, or smoking—or through intrinsic factors like medications, or excessive fluoride use. Although some people experience discoloration simply due to aging.
The most common professional teeth whitening procedures that our office provides include the following:
- Opalescence: Using high-concentrated peroxide gel, this whitening technique offers brighter, whiter teeth. Impressions are taken of the patient’s mouth, then removable trays are made. The 20% peroxide gel is placed by the patient into the trays and worn at their convenience between 2-4 hours as often as needed.
- Opalescence Go: Pre-filled, disposable whitening trays that contain hydrogen peroxide gel. They are generally worn 30-60 minutes per day, for anywhere from 5-10 days. This solution contains fluoride, which is a great whitening alternative to other options that can cause sensitivity while bleaching. The added fluoride re-mineralizes the teeth, therefore minimizing the sensitivity. These trays are the perfect “go to” bleaching system for those concerned with cost, sensitivity, and convenience.
- Sheer White Strips: Thin strips that contain 20% Carbamide Peroxide. These disposable films are comparable to the over-the-counter brands but are more effective. Patients wear them 2-4 hours as often as needed.
